Tutors at CHA
At Christiana, tutoring positions are usually filled by moms or dads of students. We do have several dedicated and wonderful tutors who do not have children in the program. In the elementary and middle school years, we are not looking for tutors who have degrees in education, but rather parents with both an interest in teaching and a passion for a particular subject matter. Perhaps they have worked in the field or excelled in the subject matter in their own schooling. The Department Chairs have developed a Scope and Sequence and provide curriculum and syllabus development help.
We do hire outside tutors to fill the positions when necessary. In the high school years, the criteria for tutors change. Tutors will have more education and expertise in the subjects they are teaching at CHA in the 9th grade and above. For example, we have math tutors that come to us from the community, from McDaniel and have some tutors who studied math in college. These individuals have built our math program over the years.
We do not expect every family to provide a parent to tutor classes. We also welcome families where moms (or dads) don’t want to teach but prefer to pay the tuition and drop off their child/ren. Parents who are not tutors are asked to volunteer as POPS (Parents on Patrol) throughout the year in order to help the program run smoothly.

Loretta Spangler
Chemistry Tutor and Algebra 2 Tutor
Although Loretta is new to CHA, she is not new to teaching math and science, beginning as a math and chemistry peer tutor in high school and college. After earning her B. S. degree from Evangel University (Springfield, Missouri), with majors in Biology and Mathematics and a minor in Chemistry, she briefly taught in a private Christian school before starting her family. She spent the next 20 years homeschooling her three sons (preK to grade 12), 14 of them as a single parent. Along the way, she contributed to a national homeschooling magazine as a product reviewer, writer, and curriculum developer; ran a used children’s literature and homeschool curriculum business; organized and taught science classes for her sons and their friends; and taught high school math and science for a local homeschool coop. Most recently, at age 57, she earned a master’s degree in library science, and for the last six years, she has been an instructional librarian at McDaniel College. Now retired from full time employment, she is delighted to return to her first love – the world of classical, Christian homeschooling! Her other interests include music (especially singing with the National Christian Choir), distance running, reading (especially history, theology, and philosophy), fashion sewing/clothing upcycling, and cooking.
